Life and Academic Coaching Course Catalog

In this ICF professional coach training, life coach training, and academic coach training program, there are eleven total courses. In Level 1, there are a total of five courses. In Level 2, there are a total of eleven core coaching courses. Level 1 students take the first five, and Level 2 students take everything. In course 5, students can choose between a Business Building course and an Academic Coaching specialty course.

Each course is developed around ICF’s core coaching competencies and designed to train you how to be a professional coach, life coach, and academic coach. Click on the course names below to get more information.


Level 1: Creating and Developing Coaches

Course 1: Getting Started as an ICF Coach

This part of the coaching program introduces the ICF ethical guidelines that ICF coaches must follow. The ICF Code of Ethics is discussed in-depth and paired with real-world examples and practical exercises. Coaching as a profession is compared with other professions and practices, such as mentoring and therapy.

Course 2: Listen and Be Present

In this part of the coaching program, students will learn how to be truly present for their coachee and learn active listening skills. Being present includes dancing in the moment with the coachee, trusting one's instinct, and being open to what the coachee is saying. Being there is a form of deep consciousness. Students learn to meet the coachee where they are through practical hands-on experiences in the learning environment.

Course 3: The Art of Awareness

In this part of the coaching program, students learn how to ask questions that allow the coachee to gain clarity and understand their perspective. Students also learn the art of asking questions to provoke deep and alternative thinking in the coachee. Finally, students learn questioning skills to help the coachee to evaluate themselves and their situation, to explore options, facts, thoughts, and feelings. The art of questioning is practiced through group coaching, observed coaching, and peer coaching.

Course 4: From Intuition to Execution

This part of the program is aimed to inform students how to coach a coachee to gain commitment. It is taught so the coach can ensure coachees have committed to their own ideas and actions in order to make forward progress.

Additionally, students learn the power of coaching plans and accountability.

Course 5A: The Business of Life Coaching

In this course, students will learn everything they need to start a coaching business. Students are introduced to why people seek coaching. Students also develop a business plan, go through various exercises to choose a coaching specialty, and become experts in the coaching cycle. Resources are shared so students can get started growing their businesses right away!

Course 5B: Academic Coaching

In this course, students will learn the ins and outs of academic coaching. Academic coaching is a way to move students forward towards their educational goals. Graduates of this course will also learn how to help students make deep connections with their learning and empower students towards success in applying self-determination principles. The Academic Coach Training Program is designed to give you the skills and tools you need to create culture change in education and help students thrive, both academically and personally.


Level 2: Advancing Coaches

Course 7: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Coaching

Examines a broader cultural lens, context, and understanding of how clients show up. Explores language fundamentals and person first language. Explores cultural humility with a real-world activity to apply the information explored. Explores cultural intelligence and neurodiversity so the coach can explore the client's context within coaching sessions.

Course 6: Advanced Foundations

Introduces students to advancing their ethics and mindset skills. It focuses on how students should conduct themselves in the coaching relationship. The set of coach-focused competencies is the focus of the course. It focuses on who the coach is rather than what the coach is doing. It focuses on advancing coaching ethics and the coaching mindset in this course.

Course 9: Advanced Presence and Listening

Focuses on how coaches can be present and listen at an advanced level in the coaching session. Advanced presence and listening skills are taught and looked at in depth. Examines coaching the “who” in a coaching session. Coaching emotions are explored, as well as coaching with compassion. Advanced listening skills are examined. Interruptions are evaluated, and reflective listening is summarized

Course 8: Advanced Agreements and Trust

It focuses on the agreement that is set up between the coach and coachee, plus the relationship that is built. Agreements are examined in depth. Starting a session is explained at an advanced level and provides the necessary concepts to apply and demonstrate the PCC markers associated with this course.

Course 11: Coach Approaches and Future of Coaching

Examines different coaching approaches in the coaching profession. Explores topics related to the future of coaching and industry trends. Includes time spent with program reflections and future planning.

Course 10: Awareness and Growth

Examines evoking new awareness in the coachee and encourages new learning while discovering new insights. Focuses on asking clear and focused questions while learning to challenge thinking. Includes reviewing aligning a coachee's learning with their actions moving forward and their goals. Explores learning as a pivotal point in the coaching process and its application being important in the coaching process.
